Job ticket 612490 · consumer · manuscript bench · no subscription

ProWritingAid reads 500 words of your novel a day for free. Your novel is 90,000.

This page is a manuscript bench. Paste a passage and a free-tier model works it finding by finding — every repeat counted, every limp verb quoted, one offered repair each, your voice untouched. Paste a chapter and get the structural read: promise, stakes, pacing, voices, exit, each stamped LANDS, WOBBLES or SLACK with the evidence quoted. No meter, no document upload, no account.

ProWritingAid is a trademark of Orpheus Technology Ltd. This is an independent, unaffiliated comparison built on ProWritingAid's own pricing page, linked below and re-read every thirty days.

Findings bench — rendered in this browser

Sample data is illustrative, not a claim about ProWritingAid. Every ProWritingAid figure on this page comes from the linked pricing page, read 2026-09-27.

The prompt pack

Two prompts, each mapped one-to-one onto a ProWritingAid feature you are currently rationed on. Run them from this page with a free key, or copy them into any free chat model — the text is identical either way, and it is printed in full at the bottom of this section so it survives this site.

Loading the pack from tools.json… If this fails, the full prompt text is still readable below.

One-time unlocks only, never a subscription. If a price ever appears here it was read from Stripe in that request, not typed by hand. An unlock is client-side gating, not secure payment verification: it is stored in this browser and cannot prove payment to anyone else.

What this replaces, and what it does not

A displacement claim you cannot substantiate is a lie with good typography. This is the whole scope, including the parts where ProWritingAid wins.

Replaced: the report meter

Line-edit findings with counts, coordinates and one offered repair each — the exact judgment layer the 2-runs-on-500-words meter rations.

Replaced: the chapter read

Promise, stakes, pacing, voices, exit — the beta-reader questions Premium's daily critique answers, with the discipline that negative verdicts must quote the text.

Replaced: re-running after revision

The workflow the meter actually breaks: edit, re-run, compare. Here a re-run is one more paste.

NOT grammar-as-you-type

No browser extension, no Word add-in, no squiggles. This is a bench you bring pages to, not a lint layer in your editor.

NOT a rewriter

The findings offer repairs as options at clause level and never touch voice, dialect or profanity. A tool that rewrites your book has stolen it politely.

NOT plagiarism or AI detection

ProWritingAid sells those; this page does not imitate them and makes no originality claims about your text.

The prompts, in full, as text

Copy these into any model. They are the product; the page around them is convenience. Each block is the exact system prompt the interactive runner sends, plus the user-message template.

Prompt 01 — 1. Line-edit report · prowritingaid-line-edit v1.0.0 · best ally: Groq Cloud — free tier · llama-3.3-70b-versatile

Replaces: The line-editing reports Free meters at 2 runs/day on 500 words: repeats, weak verbs, filter words, rhythm — each finding pinned to the exact text.

Why this model: Line editing is extraction plus a bounded suggestion per finding, at low temperature so the report criticizes the text instead of rewriting its voice; a fast instruct model does a passage in one pass and costs nothing to re-run after revisions — which is the meter this replaces. Fallback ally: Copy-Paste Relay.

System prompt (1503 chars):

You are a line editor producing a findings report on a pasted passage. You find; you do not rewrite the draft. Every finding quotes the exact text it means, because a finding the writer cannot locate is noise.

Return ONLY one JSON object. No markdown fences, no commentary, no preamble.

{
  "kicker": string (max 8 words),
  "title": string (max 8 words),
  "subhead": string (max 20 words: the passage's strongest habit and its most expensive one),
  "items": [
    { "title": string (verbatim quote of the flagged text, <= 12 words, in quotation marks), "tag": string (one of REPEAT | WEAK VERB | FILTER | RHYTHM | CLARITY | DIALOGUE), "body": string (max 30 words: why it costs the sentence something, plus ONE suggested repair phrased as an option, not an order) }
  ],
  "notes": [ string (max 25 words each) ]
}

Hard rules:
1. 6 to 20 findings. Every title is a verbatim substring of the pasted passage — if you cannot quote it, you did not find it.
2. Do not rewrite whole sentences and never adjust voice, dialect, or profanity: repairs are offered at the word or clause level, as options.
3. REPEAT findings must name the count ("third 'just' in two paragraphs"). Counting is the report's job, not the writer's.
4. If the passage is clean in a category, do not invent findings to fill the quota — fewer honest findings beat a padded report.
5. One note must say what is WORKING and quote it; a report that only cuts teaches the writer to distrust it.
6. Write in the language of the passage.

User message template:

Run the line-edit report on this passage. {{passage}} What I already know I overdo (so the report can count instead of scold): {{known_habits}}

Variables:

  • {{passage}} — Your passage (a scene works best) (max 6000 chars) sample data shipped with the tool
  • {{known_habits}} — Habits you already suspect (max 300 chars) sample data shipped with the tool

Output schema (the answer must match this exactly):

{ "type": "object", "required": [ "items" ], "properties": { "kicker": { "type": "string" }, "title": { "type": "string" }, "subhead": { "type": "string" }, "items": { "type": "array", "minItems": 6, "maxItems": 20 }, "notes": { "type": "array", "minItems": 1 } } }

Decoding: temperature 0.25 · max 1700 output tokens · responseMimeType application/json · budget ~1,600 in / ~900 out per passage · cost per run: 1 request per pass — and re-running after a revision costs the same nothing, which is exactly the meter (2 runs/day on 500 words) being removed.

Prompt 02 — 2. Chapter critique · prowritingaid-chapter-critique v1.0.0 · best ally: Google Gemini API — Free usage tier · gemini-2.5-flash-lite

Replaces: The Chapter Critique Premium meters at 1/day (Free: none) — the structural read: promise, stakes, pacing, dialogue differentiation, exit.

Why this model: A structural critique has to keep the whole chapter in working memory to say where the middle sags relative to the opening's promise; Flash-lite's free-tier context fits full chapters, and the structured output keeps the critique anchored instead of vibes-based. Fallback ally: OpenRouter — :free model variants.

System prompt (1579 chars):

You are a beta reader writing a structural critique of one chapter. You answer the questions that matter between drafts, you anchor every judgment in quoted evidence, and you never rewrite the author's prose or flatter it.

Return ONLY one JSON object. No markdown fences, no commentary.

{
  "kicker": string (max 8 words),
  "title": string (max 8 words),
  "subhead": string (max 22 words: what this chapter is FOR in one honest clause),
  "items": [
    { "title": string (one of exactly: "The promise", "The stakes", "The pacing", "The voices", "The exit"), "tag": string (one of LANDS | WOBBLES | SLACK), "body": string (max 55 words, grounded in the chapter with at least one verbatim quoted fragment where the judgment is WOBBLES or SLACK) }
  ],
  "notes": [ string (max 30 words each) ]
}

Hard rules:
1. Exactly five items, in the listed order: promise (what the opening commits to), stakes (what is at risk and for whom), pacing (where time thickens or leaks), voices (can the speakers be told apart blind), exit (what the last beat hands the next chapter).
2. Every WOBBLES or SLACK verdict quotes the passage where the problem lives. LANDS may quote or not.
3. Judge the chapter against its own apparent intent, stated by the author if provided — never against a genre template the author did not choose.
4. Suggest at most 2 structural moves total across all notes, phrased as experiments ("try opening at the ferry"), never as instructions.
5. No praise inflation: LANDS must be defensible to a skeptical author on reread.
6. Write in the language of the chapter.

User message template:

Critique this chapter structurally. The chapter: {{chapter}} What I think this chapter is for (optional but it sharpens the read): {{intent}}

Variables:

  • {{chapter}} — Paste the chapter (max 12000 chars) sample data shipped with the tool
  • {{intent}} — The chapter's job, in your words (max 400 chars) sample data shipped with the tool

Output schema (the answer must match this exactly):

{ "type": "object", "required": [ "items" ], "properties": { "kicker": { "type": "string" }, "title": { "type": "string" }, "subhead": { "type": "string" }, "items": { "type": "array", "minItems": 5, "maxItems": 5 }, "notes": { "type": "array" } } }

Decoding: temperature 0.4 · max 1300 output tokens · responseMimeType application/json · budget ~3,500 in / ~700 out per chapter · cost per run: 1 request per chapter against Gemini's free daily allowance — Premium meters this exact read at one per day; a free tier does not.

Questions worth asking before you cancel

Does this need an API key?

No — copy either prompt into any free chat model and paste the JSON answer back; the bench renders from your paste. A free Groq or Gemini key just removes the copy-paste hop.

Is Premium US$10 or US$30?

Both figures are real and both were on the page 2026-09-27: US$30/month billed monthly, US$10/month when billed yearly as US$120. Premium Pro is US$36 or US$12/month (US$144/yr). The Lifetime tab's numbers did not render in our capture, so they stay unconfirmed.

Will it rewrite my chapter?

No, by rule. Findings quote and suggest at clause level; the critique judges structure against your stated intent. The draft's sentences remain yours to fix — that is the point of a report.

What about the 500-word free window — isn't 6,000 characters here a limit too?

The paste box caps a single run for free-tier context reasons, but runs are unmetered: work a long chapter in passes, scene by scene, at no cost. The difference is a workflow, not a paywall.
